Servus Ihr lieben.........
Also schrieb ich die UP an!! Haltet euch fest: Die haben geantwortet
Dear Mr. Kruger:
In the early 1970s Union Pacific Railroad, seeing that technological
breakthrough seemed imperative, began studying electrification of two of
its high density freight corridors, one in Wyoming and the other in Utah.
The initial study was completed in August, 1972, analyzed a 530-mile
main line from North Platte, Neb. to Green River, Wyo. Electrification was
deemed not only technically, but also economically feasible. An additional
analysis, completed in June, 1973, investigated extending the project to
Salt Lake City, Utah and Pocatello, Idaho. The studies were completed in
1975. A respectable rate of return was demonstrated, but the financial
magnitude and operational impacts justified a high rate of reservation by
Union Pacific.
Two test sections of catenary were built as part of the studies. The
first was built at Farmington, Utah, north of Salt Lake City, using
European and Japanese designs. The second section west of Cheyenne,
Wyoming on Sherman Hill used American designs. Both systems were energized
to measure the effect of electrification on commercial communications
(radio and television) and railroad signal and communications systems. No
electric powered trains were tested on either section.
The studies were updated in 1980. In 1982 the Federal Railroad
Administration strongly advocated that railroads consider eletrification
and suggested some private-public financing ideas. However regulatory
issues were cited by Union Pacific that could negate cost-reducing capital
investments such as electrification. Union Pacific indicated, however, that
despite uncertainties and risks associated with electrification, that it
remained interested in participation in a federally-sponsored
electrification program. Political support, however, never materialized and
the issue has been dormant since then.
I have some photos of the test catenary installations. I am
attaching a copy of our Access and Use Agreement/fee schedule for your
